Flower Puns List
Each item in this list describes a pun, or a set of puns which can be made by applying a rule. If you know of any puns about flowers that we’re missing, please let us know in the comments at the end of this page! Without further ado, here’s the list of flower puns:
- Pulling → Pollen: As in “I’m just pollen your leg.” and “It’s like pollen teeth” and “We don’t have enough pollen power.”
- Pedal → Petal: As in “Put the petal to the metal” and “Backpetal” and “Soft-petal (downplay)”
- Peddle → Petal: As in “She went from house to house petaling her wares.”
- Flower: “Flower power” and “The flower of one’s youth”
- Boom! → Bloom!
- Bud: This is short of “buddy”, and can also refer to a flower bud. This dual meaning could be used for a pun: “Hey bud, how’s it growing?”
- Buddy: See above.
- Bed → Bud: As in “Budtime” and “Bud and breakfast” and “Bud of nails”
- Bad → Bud: As in “Do you want the good news or the bud news?” and “A bud omen” and “A bud apple” and “A bud time” and “Don’t give a dog a bud name” and “It went from bud to worse” and “In bud faith” and “Bud news travels fast” and “Not too bud” and “Make the best of a bud situation” and “In bud taste” and “It ended on bud terms” and “A bud hair day”

- Anybody → Anybudy: “Somebudy? Anybudy?”
- Morbid → Morbud
- Ombudsman: An ombudsman is a government employee who investigates complaints by non-government people against the government.
- Butt → Bud: As in “A kick in the bud” and “At the bud of the joke” and “Let’s kick some bud” and “Bustin’ my bud” and “A pain in the bud” and “Bud naked”
- Blossom: We use this word to describe something that is growing or developing quickly as in “Her business has blossomed and she’s doing well.”
- For all → Floral: As in “Once and floral” and “Floral intents and purposes.”
- Floor I’ll → Floral: As in “If you mop the flor, al wipe the benches – deal?”
- Floor is → Florist: As in “Did you clean the kitchen? The florist still dirty.”
- Flourished → Florist: As in “She has florist into an intelligent, strong young woman.”
- Okay → Bouquet: As in “Are you feeling bouquet?”
- Dizzy → Daisy: As in “I’m feeling a bit light-headed and daisy.”
- Days is → Daisies: As in “Three daisies enough time to complete the task.”
- Fruit: Flowers give rise to fruit which bare the fertilised seeds of the plant, thus, a fruit pun could be a viable flower pun: “This has been a fruitful discussion.” and “The fruits of our labour”
- Rose: Some simple rose puns can be made with the past tense of rise: “She rose to the occasion” and “I rose above it”
- Dandy lion → Dandelion: The term “dandy” can refer to someone who dresses fancy all the time, or it can just be a synonym for “excellent”. Good luck finding a context where this pun will come in useful! 😛
- Awkward → Orchid: As in “You’ve put me in an orchid position.”
- Or kid → Orchid: As in “Adults orchids – it doesn’t matter.”
- Lovin’ the → Lavender: As in “I’m lavender tunes that this DJ is playing!”
- Garden variety: This is a term meaning “standard, unexceptional” – e.g. “He’s just your garden variety politician – nothing special there.”
- Guarding → Garden: As in “Fox garden the hen house.”
- Oh very → Ovary: In the flowering plants, an ovary is a part of the female reproductive organ of the flower.
- Floor it → Floret: The phrase “floor it” refers to pushing the car accerlerator until it hits the floor – i.e. it means “go fast”. A “floret” is one of many small flowers which make up a larger “composite” flower.
- Flowery: The term “flowery” means “full of elaborate or literary words and phrases”. It’s a synonym to “fancy”, “flamboyant” and “high-sounding”. The phrase “Flowery prose” is common.
- Stamina → Stamena: The stamen is the pollen-producing reproductive organ of a flower. The term “stamina” refers to the ability to sustain prolonged physical or mental effort.
- Two lips → Tulips: As in “Everyone has two lips.”
- I lack → Lilac: As in “Lilac the ability to finish things that I start.”
- Leave → Leaf: “Take it or leaf it” and “Absent without leaf” and “You should leaf now.” and “Leaf an impression” and “Leafed for dead” and “Leaf it at that” and “Leaf me alone!” and “Leaf of absence” and “Leaf out in the cold” and “Take leaf” and “Leafing so soon?” See the entry on leaf puns for more.
- Pistol → Pistil: A pistil is a part of a flower.
- Car pull → Carpel: Carpels are parts of the pistils of flowers.
- Saw → Seed: Fertilised flowers result in a fruit (not all are edible) that contains one or more seeds. An imaginary past tense of “see” could make for a silly flower pun.
